'Field hospitals' for revellers
Young drinker
People with minor injuries will be treated in the experiment
A series of 'field hospitals' will be set up to treat revellers with minor injuries during the party season.

The scheme, run by the Welsh Ambulance Service, will help ease pressure on hospital emergency departments.

The idea was piloted in Swansea last year. It will be repeated there, as well as being tried in Cardiff and Newport, and possibly Wrexham.

The units will operate on 17, 24 and 31 December - some of the busiest party dates.

Rapid response' paramedics will answer 999 calls from pubs and clubs instead of regular ambulances.

Where possible, patients will be treated in the 'field hospitals' rather than being sent to hospital.

The government has published a White Paper on Public Health, part of which looks at alcohol abuse.

As well as serious health problems, drinking heavily can lead to violence and serious injury.
