A boxer has been given a community punishment order after punching a mourner unconscious at a funeral.

Gavin Rees, 24, punched Michael Booton after being thrown out of the wake.

At Cardiff Crown Court Rees, known in the ring as "The Rock," was ordered to do 100 hours of community punishment and 12 months of rehabilitation after admitting wounding.

Boxing authorities said they were considering action against Rees, of Newbridge, south Wales.

It was all down to drink, which is very unimpressive in a sportsman
Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC

Christopher Rees, prosecuting, told the court that Rees became involved in a scuffle after being thrown out of the wake in Newbridge and knocked Mr Booton unconscious with a punch.

Mr Rees said: "Mr Booton remembers nothing about the assault - his next recollection is coming round in hospital."

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC told Rees: "I am sure your trainer and promoter will have given you an almighty telling off for bringing your profession into disrepute.

Undefeated record

"The danger with boxers is when they hit people they forget the power and skills they possess.

"It really is unforgivable - it was all down to drink, which is very unimpressive in a sportsman."

Rees, who has a record of 21 wins in 21 fights, with 12 knockouts, is on the books of promoter Frank Warren and trains at the same gym as WBO super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe.

The former WBO Intercontinental featherweight title-holder is now a lightweight and he will face a hearing before the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC).

Robert Smith, assistant general secretary of the BBBC, said: "He will be called before the Welsh area council and they will go through the situation.

"The council has the power to extend the suspension of his licence or withdraw it completely.

"Whether they do that is another thing.

"Until we get all the documentation about the incident we cannot make a judgement."
