Forty years of Borth breaks

Bucking the growing trend of package deals and cheap flights abroad, a west Midlands couple have been visiting the same Welsh town for 40 years.

Marguerite and John Yates, from Walsall, first went to Borth in Ceredigion when they were 21.

Over the last four decades, they have taken a break there every year, sharing the family trips with their children Karen and Kevin.

More recently, they have also taken grandchildren Mitchell and Luke to sample the sights of the seaside town.

The couple, who are now both 61, enjoyed their latest break there just two weeks ago.

"We had a lovely time, as we always do," said Mrs Yates.

"We tend to do the same things each time we go there and visit the same places because it is so lovely."

They first went to Borth with friends who had a caravan there and, for the first 25 years, they kept going back to Brynowen holiday park.

After that, they dramatically moved to the Northfield caravan site, to which they have returned for 15 years.

And they are so keen to get the same caravan, they book it up two years in advance.

Despite a recent holiday to Florida with their grandchildren, they have vowed not to turn their back on Borth.

Jean Maidens, who runs the animalarium in Borth, said the town had a lot of attractions to keep tourists coming back.

"It is an extremely attractive town with a couple of miles of beach," she said.

"It is very quiet, and not commercial - it is an old-fashioned resort.

"There are a couple of good pubs and good restaurants - what more do you want?

"A holiday in Borth hasn't changed much in the last 100 years."
