Prison officer taken hostage
Parc Prison
Trained hostage negotiators were sent to the prison
An investigation is under way after a woman officer was taken hostage by an inmate at a south Wales prison.

The 21-year-old man, who claimed he had a self-made explosive, took the officer hostage at Parc Prison in Bridgend on Sunday night.

Negotiators were called to an office on one of the wings and the hostage was released just over an hour later.

The man, who arrived at the prison in January, was taken to the segregation unit. A man was later arrested.

The incident happened at 1940 BST on Sunday at one of the blocks in the privately-run prison.

The prisoner, from Belfast, is serving 30 months for burglary and three months for fraud.

Negotiators were called in and the officer was released unharmed at 2045 BST after the inmate surrendered.

The woman officer was offered the support of the prison's chaplain and its care and support team.

Bomb disposal experts were also called into the site.

At the same time as the hostage situation was going on, 31 prisoners were involved in a peaceful protest on the exercise yard of the prison wing and refused to return to their cells.

Following negotiations with staff, the inmates later returned to their cells.
