Council leader's court summons
Peter Clarke, Children's Commissioner
Peter Clarke has served a High Court summons on Mr Jones
The leader of Bridgend Council, Jeff Jones, has been served with a High Court summons by the children's' commissioner for Wales.

The summons, issued in the name of Peter Clarke, alleges that Jeff Jones was in contempt of the Clywch inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse by former drama teacher John Owen.

It is claimed that Mr Jones was in contempt when he wrote in a letter that parents were keeping quiet about the allegations.

A High Court sitting will be held on 9 June to determine the outcome of the summons.

Earlier this year, Mr Clarke referred the matter to the Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, who in March decided not to refer Mr Jones to the High Court to face allegations of contempt.

But Mr Clarke said at the time that he was "minded" to refer the matter himself.

Bridgend council leader Mr Jones had criticised the conduct of the Clywch inquiry, set up to look into allegations of child abuse by the former Welsh language drama teacher John Owen.

Inquiry letter

Mr Owen committed suicide two years ago shortly before he was to stand trial over allegations by former pupils of Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen, Pontypridd.

In his letter, Mr Jones said former Mid Glamorgan education officials were being made scapegoats.

He accused parents of the children of keeping quiet about abuse allegations for fear of damaging the Welsh language - an accusation for which he later apologised.

The Clywch inquiry ended in November 2003.
