Appeal for sea tragedy families
Lifeboatman Alan Massey
The search for Alan Massey was called off on Tuesday
An appeal fund is to be set up for the families of lifeboatman Keith Allday and Alan Massey.

Mr Allday's body was found on Tuesday, a day after the two men were reported missing after working on moorings in Barmouth harbour.

Mr Massey is still missing although a search for him was called off on Tuesday night.

Two separate inquiries are currently under way into the accident.

Meanwhile, the official opening of the town's new 1m RNLI boathouse and headquarters, planned for 20 April, has been postponed following the loss of the two RNLI crew members.

RNLI spokesman Andy Clift said: "The decision not to go ahead with an official opening was taken locally and supported by the RNLI."

The flag at Barmouth's lifeboat station has been flying at half-mast since the discovery of Mr Allday's body.

As well as being RNLI volunteers, father-of-five Mr Allday, 54 was Barmouth's harbour master, with 36-year-old Mr Massey his assistant.

The two men had being doing routine work for Gwynedd Council in the town's harbour on Monday.

They were not seen after 1100 BST and their capsized boat was found outside the harbour walls at 1700 BST, sparking a 22-hour search involving over 60 people on land, sea and air.

Mr Allday's body was found shortly before 1500 GMT on Tuesday on the nearby Fairbourne beach.

Mr Massey is still missing, although the search operation was called off on Tuesday evening.

Two inquiries, by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and Gwynedd Council are now under way into the accident.

Talking about the appeal to help the men's families, Aeron Williams, of Barmouth Town Council, said: "The people who come down here to the caravan sites are keen to help in any way possible.

"It's a tragic loss for them because they all had such close contact with Alan and Keith on their holidays."

Dafydd Whittle, of Gwynedd Council, added: "They were both very experienced seafarers, both part very much of the life of the harbour here in Barmouth."
