Pc Keith Cheshire of North Wales Police - one of eight suspended officers - was facing a disciplinary hearing after using the term "Paki".

He denied being racist and the Crown Prosecution Service has said no criminal charges would be brought. Deputy chief constable Clive Wolfendale said efforts continued to address racism in North Wales Police.

A spokeswoman for the force said on Wednesday: "I can confirm that Pc Keith Cheshire has now resigned."

The programme was secretly-filmed at a police training college where undercover reporter Mark Daly trained as an officer with the Greater Manchester force.

Pc Cheshire, a former plumber who lives in Wrexham, was filmed while at the college in Warrington, saying: "Anyone of an Indian nature straight away you would just call him a Paki, wouldn't you?"

After it was broadcast last October, Mr Cheshire said: "I would not consider myself in any way a racist. I'm absolutely gutted."

"There are no ethnic people in my family but I have had some quite close ethnic friends for about 18 years."

He is the second to resign from the north Wales force.

Pc Rob Pulling resigned following the screening of the programme - although he claimed at the time that his extreme views were not out of place in the force.

He was filmed putting on a Ku Klux Klan-style hood and saying he would bury an Asian under a train.

Mr Wolfendale said he hoped Wednesday's resignation would draw a line under what had happened.

"This marks the conclusion of the internal investigation following The Secret Policeman," he said.

"Though of course we continue our efforts within the organisation and with our communities to ensure that racism does not have a part in North Wales Police."

There have been a total of 10 resignations since the programme was aired: six officers from Greater Manchester Police, two from Cheshire, and two from north Wales.
