Mr Jeffes has spent nearly seven years in Wales.

He said it was "time for a change and new challenges beckon".

Mrs Hyde said: "As director in Wales, Leigh has guided and led the Welsh party through a period of immense change which included the establishment of the National Assembly".

"We thank Leigh for his tremendous dedication and professionalism and wish him every success in his new venture".

Mr Jeffes said:" I have had the most wonderful career with the Conservative Party. I am very proud of the development and achievements of the Welsh Conservative Party during this period".

He now plans to set up a public relations and public affairs consultancy.
