Azmat Begg will speak at an anti-war rally in Aberystwyth |
The father of one of the last four British detainees at the US camp in Guantanamo Bay has pleaded for his son to be released.Azmat Begg's son, Moazzam, has been in American custody since he was arrested in Islamabad, Pakistan, in February 2002.
He said that the 36-year-old was being kept under inhumane conditions and should at least be offered the luxury of a trial to be proven guilty or innocent of terrorism. Mr Begg was speaking ahead of a peace rally in mid Wales to mark the first anniversary of the war in Iraq.
The event, which will be held in Aberystwyth on Saturday, has been organised by CND Cymru/Wales and the Aberystwyth Peace and Justice Network.
Earlier this month, five British men were released from the prison camp on Cuba. But four more, including father-of-four Moazzam, from Birmingham, remain in Guantanamo Bay.
His father told BBC Radio Wales that his son had spent two years in a cell, mostly in the dark, without coming before a court.
"I last heard from him in October, when he said that he had been jogging in his cell but even that luxury had been taken away from him and he just sits in the corner of his cell."
Moazzam Begg has been detained for more than two years |
And, he added: "If he's done something wrong, he should be punished, so why don't they bring him to court?" Mr Begg said he had urged his son to move to Kabul with his wife and children to fulfil an ambition to build a school and help improve water supplies. The family then fled the Afghan capital for Pakistan, where the arrest took place.
The rally being held in Aberystwyth will include a march through the town to the castle.
Speakers during the day will include Jill Evans MEP, chair of CND Cymru/Wales, former Welsh Secretary Ron Davies, and actor Corin Redgrave.
Mabon ap Gwynfor, spokesman for the Aberystwyth Peace and Justice Network, said: "Mr Begg will be talking about the Guantanamo Bay issue and calling for the four remaining detainees to be released or face trial in the UK.
'Solitary confinement'
"The Tipton Three (recently released detainees) said that Moazzam Begg is being held in Camp Echo, which is the hardest part of Guantanamo Bay.
"They said that he is being kept in solitary confinement - it's a very serious situation."
Moazzam Begg is believed to have been arrested in Pakistan as a suspected al-Qaeda or Taleban fighter.
Campaigners say the law student was in Afghanistan to teach children, rather than to fight American and British forces.
Mr ap Gwynfor added: "He is alleged to have confessed to designing a plane which could travel from Afghanistan to bomb the White House.
"He's a law student and doesn't have a clue about things like physics or chemistry needed to take part in bombings.
Earlier this month, Azmat Begg travelled to the US capital, Washington, with relatives of other European detainees to call on the American Government to release those held at Guantanamo Bay.
