Final sentencing over estate riots

In the final round of sentencing, a group of nine men and youths have been given custodial sentences totalling more than 11 years for their roles in last summer's riots on a Wrexham housing estate.

A 13-year-old boy who also pleaded guilty to taking part in the second night of violence on the Caia Park estate was given a supervision order.

In total, 51 people have now appeared in court for the rioting - with sentences handed down mounting to more than 80 years in all.

The arrests were made following two nights of disturbances between long-term local residents and Iraqi Kurds on the estate on 22 June 2002.

Trouble first flared on the estate after an Iraqi man was attacked and badly injured. An initial attack on the Red Dragon pub continued the following night when a mob of about 200 attacked police with missiles and petrol bombs.

The judge said the violence quickly turned into nothing more than an excuse to attack as many policemen as possible.

"The events that I am concerned with here only have a loose association in my view with the presence of a number of Iraqi nationals in the area," said Judge Roger Dutton.

He added: "Over a sustained period, these officers were stoned and petrol bombed by a unruly, wild, baying mob containing all age groups."

During the disturbances, North Wales Police drafted in back up officers from neighbouring forces, including Merseyside.

Stone throwing

Mold Crown Court heard on Tuesday how a boy of 13 played a prominent role, hurling at least 11 stones at police because he was angry that officers had struck his father with truncheons.

Caught on CCTV he was seen at the front of the group watching others make what was the first petrol bomb but stayed in the background when it was actually thrown.

He later told the police he had been throwing stones at Iraqis living on the estate to try to get them to leave.

Following the sentencing Detective Inspector Gwyn Jones, North Wales Police, said: "There is no sense of victory in this at all.

"I think that a very small minority of people have brought shame on themselves and their communities."

Another defendant Mark David Lawrence, 23, was said to have played a prominent role throughout the incident.

'Stupid moment'

He was captured CCTV throwing missiles at the police and chanting.

Regretting his actions, he told the court: "I thought that as soon as I done it, I shouldn't have done it. Three kids to support, bad mistake for me."

The men and youths were all from the Wrexham area.

Vaughan John Powell, 21, of St David's Crescent was sentenced to18 months imprisonment.

Stuart Michael Davies, 24, of Bryn Gwenfro was jailed for two years but received an additional 18 months for other offences.

Mark David Lawrence, 23, of Gwenfro received 18 months and Ashley Lucas Powell, 18, of Montgomery Road received 12 months youth detention.

Andrew Lee Sumner, 18, St David's Crescent received 10 months youth detention.

A 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy received 18 months detention and training sentences.

Another 17-year-old received a 12 month detention and training order, and a 16-year-old received a 10 month detention and training order.
