Roads around Carmarthen were closed by flooding

Half a dozen homeowners in Ynys Meudy near Pontardawe are clearing up after a flash flood hit their road after a mountain pond further up the valley broke open into the River Cwmdu.

Elsewhere the river Cothi burst its banks, flooding nearby housing at Pontargothi along the A40.

Flooded roads in Carmarthen closed a number of schools and the A40 in the town between Morfa Lane and Blue Street was also shut to traffic.

The Environment Agency warned that river levels in south and west Wales were rising.

But one of the main worries in Carmarthen - the high water level in the river Tywi due to the rising tide overnight - passed.

As the tide ebbed, the water went down slightly, allowing the main dual carriageway into the town to be reopened to single-file traffic.

But Dyfed-Powys Police said a number of main roads across the force area, including the old Abergwili road near Carmarthen, were shut due to flooding.

In addition to the river Cothi, there were also flood warnings on the Bran at Llandovery, the Neath at Resolven and the Towy at Abergwili and at Carmarthen.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service crews pumped out flooded properties at Llandeilo, Pencader, Crickhowell and Llandysul on Wednesday morning.
