Two surgeries in the village of Angle shut before Christmas |
Villagers have vowed to oppose the possible closure of two GP surgeries in north Pembrokeshire. People attending a public meeting on Monday night resolved to fight the plans for the surgeries which have been open for 80 years at Maenclochog and Clarbeston.
A practice in Narberth has asked for permission to close down its services at a private home and a chapel hall because of concerns about health and safety.
The local health board will meet to decide the future of the surgeries.
The news comes weeks after two other Pembrokeshire surgeries, in the village of Angle, were closed despite fierce opposition from people living there.
Dr Stephanie Wood, one of the doctors who has put in the closure request, said before the meeting that the surgeries were not suitably equipped.
"If you require to do any investigation of a patient, you have to ask them to come into Narberth health centre to have that done," she said.
"Often this leads to two consultations for one problem.
"There is no adequate examination facility, there is no disabled access, there is no facility for taking medical samples," said Dr Wood.
She said GPs would continue to do home visits, but most patients had transport available to make the 30-minute drive to Narberth.
However, local people have said they think the concerns about health and safety are "a lever" to close the surgeries.
