Proceedings are under way to extradite Gerald Baker |
Police in Spain have arrested a registered sex offender who was wanted in connection with the abduction of his son from social services care. Gerald Baker, 46, who is a registered sex offender and 37-year-old Helene Baker were initially thought to have fled to France from south Wales with their eight-month-old son who was in the care of social services.
It emerged on Thursday that the pair were found in Gibraltar and were later arrested in Spain - over a month after they absconded.
The baby is in the care of social services in Gibraltar and extradition proceedings are underway.
The baby's mother, Helene, who lived in Blaenavon near Pontypool, is reported to have collected her son from social services in Ebbw Vale lunchtime on Monday 19 August for a one hour unsupervised visit.
For over four months, Mrs Baker had been allowed unsupervised contact with the baby, who has been living with foster parents, without causing social services any concern.
But she failed to return him and it is then that it is thought she then met up with her husband and fled Wales.
Director of Blaenau Gwent Social Services Roger Bone said: "We are delighted that the child has been found safe and well and are looking forward to getting the child back as soon as possible."
DI Peter Keen of Gwent police said: "Our thanks go out to the authorities in Gibraltar and Spain for the prompt cooperation which has ensured the baby is safe."
