An investigation has begun after the death of an elderly woman patient at Whitchurch psychiatric hospital in Cardiff.

BBC Wales understands that the woman lay dead for almost 10 hours before her death was discovered.

It is understood that a nurse has been suspended from work.

A spokesman released by Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust, which manages the hospital, said that the coroner is not involved.

"We can confirm that an internal investigation has been launched within the trust following the death of a patient at Whitchurch Hospital last week," said the spokesman.

It is not known why the woman was in hospital.

It is understood she died at around 2230 BST one night last week, but her death was not discovered until 0830 BST the following morning.
