The Wales National Pool has a 50m pool |
Efforts to bring the international paralympic swimming championships to Swansea in 2006 have been given a financial boost. The city's bid to host the competition at the Wales National Pool is to benefit from 400,000 of Lottery funds.
Swansea is up against Paris, in France, and Durban, in south Africa, as it strives to hold the four-yearly event.
The 11m state-of-the-art Wales National Pool opened in March this year.
It is hoped that the championships would bring more than half a million pounds to the area.
Swansea Council's Robert Francis-Davies said the city has everything necessary to be a perfect host.
"The facility at Swansea University Sports Village, which incorporates a halls of residence that can house athletes and officials, makes it an ideal setting," he said.
Important competition
The Lottery cash has been awarded by UK Sport, which co-ordinates bringing major events in Britain.
John Scott, from UK Sport said: "Staging the games in Swansea would provide a massive boost to the development of Britain's leading swimmers with a disability, two years out from the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing."
The championships is ranked as the most important competition for disabled swimmers outside the Paralympic Games.
Britain is currently the world's leading nation in disability swimming after finishing top of the medals table at the 2002 championships in Argentina.
