Tenby's old town, Portmeirion's paths or Barry Island's beach? Where is your favourite Welsh tourist attraction?

For the first time, the public is being asked for its nominations for the National Tourism Awards - the holidaymaking "Oscars".

The Wales Tourist Board wants to know the country's favourite place to stay, top day out and even the name of the most welcoming host.

Winners will be honoured in November, as the board embarks on a drive to raise the annual tourist spend by 6% for seven years running.

The awards are split into 11 categories and will be hosted at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens cricket ground, to where 200 tourist industry movers and shakers from around the world have been invited.

2002 AWARD WINNERS
Faenol Festival, best show
Kevin Jones, IT in tourism
Llanwrtyd Wells, community prize
Welsh Slate Museum, Sense of Place award
Fairyhill Hotel, Taste of Wales
"It's going to be the culmination of three days of intense marketing," said tourist board chief executive Jonathan Jones.

"It's to raise the profile even further of tourism in Wales. We are looking for new talents and businesses that are emerging."

Public votes will provide a shortlist for the board, which will later judge entries - and winners are guaranteed a spin-off trade boost.

The tourism industry is one of Wales' biggest earners, contributing 2.5bn annually to the economy and employing 100,000 people, according to Wales Tourist Board.

The really great places can make you gasp with the beauty. Lake Louise in Canada, the clouds pouring over the Madeiran mountains, the pink buttresses of the Dolomites and, unsurpassed in the UK, Worms Head in the Gower.
Patrick Stevens, UK

Pembrokeshire, can't beat it-even when it's raining, this has got to be the most beautiful area in the entire British Isles. If I were to narrow it down I would have to choose Manorbier - quiet and relaxed and simply wonderful to visit, reminds me of some fantastic family holidays that I am now repeating with my daughter.
Ed, Wales

Anglesey is the best place in the world for switching off to the pressures of life. Crossing the bridge over to the island is the best feeling ever.
Eveleyn Edwards, England

Best Welsh day - lazy summer morning at Bodnant Gardens in the Conwy valley, playing Pooh sticks on the weir. Slow drive to the other side of the valley, through Conwy, stopping to admire what is the best castle in the land, over the Sychnant Pass through to Aber Falls for a leisurely stroll. Back down to Abergwyngregyn, wonderful drive along the coast to Llandudno to wrap it all up with fish and chips, and a Cadwalader icecream on the seafront. Can't beat it, no matter how hard you try.

Tenby is the best, quaint yet modern with outstanding hotels and beaches, even better now when you can sit in the main street outside a pub and eat

Saundersfoot for me is a place that every time I visit takes me back to my childhood. I visit as often as possible and take my son there too. Maybe it will become for him what it has become to me. Days of carefree fun.
Nicola Hackett Reed, England

Folly Farm in Pembrokeshire must be one of the best days out for kids, fantastic, my lot loved it.
Bryn, Wales

Newport, Pembrokeshire, is my favourite place to visit. The Cnapan restaurant is the most welcoming restaurant I have ever visited. Mike and Judy and their family make one feel at home and the food is superb. I would thoroughly recommend them for most welcoming hosts.
Essex Havard, Wales
