DNA snares alcoholic burglar
DNA strand
Jones' DNA was found on a wine bottle

An alcoholic burglar was caught after leaving his DNA on a bottle of wine he drank at his victim's house.

Mark Anthony Jones, of Buckley, north Wales, drank a bottle of wine after breaking into a house in Buckley while the owner was at work.

Flintshire Magistrates' Court heard that the 41-year-old told police who interviewed him that he was an alcoholic and had no recollection of the break-in.

But in court he admitted the burglary, saying that if his DNA was at the property, he must have been there.

Prosecutor Huw Evans told the court how Jones got into the house through an insecure window and stole alcohol and crisps, together with a rucksack.

But while inside the house, he drank a bottle of wine in the kitchen, left the bottle behind, and was traced after his DNA was found on the bottle by police scenes of crimes officers.

Jones was placed on a community rehabilitation order for 12 months and ordered to pay 134 compensation with 55 costs.
