Police say they are morally bound to cut the bike death toll

Police are increasingly worried about the number of motorbike fatalities in rural Wales.

There have been more deaths so far this year in north Wales than in the whole of 2002.

The latest victim was a 31-year-old woman from Leicester.

She died when the red Yamaha she was riding was in collision with a car on the A5 between the Bala turn-off and Corwen.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened at 1946 BST on Sunday. Almost all the accidents have happened at weekends.

Officers want to hear from anyone who saw the bike, which had stopped at a service station in the village of Betws-y-Coed 25 minutes earlier.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was the first woman motorcylist to be killed in north Wales this year.

North Wales deputy chief constable Bill Brereton told BBC Wales' Week In Week Out last week that police were "morally bound" to cut the number of deaths.

Other parts of rural Wales have also seen high levels of motorbike deaths. Six people have died in Dyfed-Powys so far this year, compared with only one at the same point last year.
