Dogs will be banned from Tenby's North Beach

Dogs are being banned from some of Pembrokeshire's most popular family beaches during the summer.

Pets will not be allowed on nine of the county's Blue Flag winning sands from the start of next month through to the end of September.

The move, which is being made to keep the beaches free from dirt, has been welcomed by trade and tourism operators.

Tenby South is one of the areas where the ban will be in place for the first time.

The town sees its population grow from 5,000 to 50,000 during the summer months with families seeking sun, sea and sand accounting for the majority of visitors.

President of Tenby Chamber of Trade, Howard Lewis, said it was important the beaches were kept as clean as possible at peak times.

"We always feel that there should be provision of some sort for dog owners, " he said.

"There are miles of coastal paths where dogs are allowed, along with the far end of the south beach which does not attract that many families.

"As long as there is this provision then we are happy to see these restrictions."

Areas where dogs are not allowed will be clearly marked.

Pembrokeshire Council says the restrictions are aimed at ensuring the beaches retain their Blue Flag status.

Legal action

One of the criteria used for the European standard is the cleanliness of the shore.

Dog warden Debbie Hart said the authority was seeking the cooperation of all dog owners but would resort to legal action if necessary.

"It is important that everyone checks for signs at beaches that show where dogs are restricted," she said.

"There are plenty of good beach areas for dog walkers but remember though that clean-up laws are in operation in Pembrokeshire throughout the year.

"If dog owners break the law, the council can take legal action."

She appealed for anyone who spots offenders to contact the authority.
