Lance Bombardier Llywelyn Evans died at the start of the war |
Troops have honoured a soldier from north Wales killed at the beginning of the conflict in Iraq, by unofficially naming a captured bridge in Basra after him. Lance Bombardier Llywelyn Evans, 24, from Llandudno, was one of 12 British and American soldiers who died in a helicopter crash on the first day of the war.
Now members of the Commando-trained Royal Engineers have named the crossing "Welly Bridge" to commemorate the soldier.
The body of 24-year-old Mr Evans - of the 29 Commando regiment which supports the Royal Marines - was returned to his family in Llandudno, north Wales, over the weekend.

"Welly Bridge", which crosses a minor inland waterway was secured by a team from 59 Independent Commando Squadron, Royal Engineers, earlier this week.
Many of the unit knew Lance Bombardier Evans.
"We would have loved to have put up a plaque and officially rename the bridge but for us, from now on it will be known as Welly Bridge," said Corporal James Maloney, 26.
"We took it and felt we could honour Welly at the same time. Many of the lads knew him personally and it was the least we could do," he added.
Lance Bombardier Evans' brother Lee, 20, had also been serving in the Gulf, but was flown home after the accident on compassionate leave.
Meanwhile, Welsh troops in Iraq have been handed a unique honour for their involvement in heavy fighting near Basra.
Members of the Queen's Dragoon Guards - also known as the Welsh Cavalry - have been presented with the Commando dagger by the Royal Marines after taking out more than 20 Iraqi tanks.
History
The honour given to the Welsh Cavalry is thought to be the first time an army unit has received such recognition.
"It is nice to know we are good at our job and other people have noticed it as well," said Trooper Dale Thomas.
"There is a lot of history behind it - we have gained the respect of the marines - that means a lot," said Lance Corporal Gareth Thomas.
"I think the boys are going to start sewing it on right away," he added.
