Town anger at tourism 'snub'
Newtown
Newtown attractions were left out of a leaflet sent to 180,000 addresses
A mid-Wales town says it has been snubbed by producers of a new tourism leaflet.

The leaflet - called Great Days Out on the Cambrian Line - highlights places of interest in mid Wales, including the Welshpool and Llanfair light railway and Powis Castle.

But although Shrewsbury, Welshpool, Machynlleth, Barmouth, Tywyn and Aberystwyth are included, Newtown has been left out.

Published by a consortium including Wales and Borders Trains, the leaflet has been sent to 180,000 homes and businesses.

Newtown is the birthplace of social reformer, Robert Owen, who set up the Co-operative movement.

But the town is only mentioned on the leaflet's back cover as a stop on the line between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth.

I am very disappointed that Newtown attractions have not been included in this leaflet
Shirley Owen, Newtown Partnership

Shirley Owen is project development officer of The Newtown Partnership, a group set up to promote the town.

"I am very disappointed that Newtown attractions have not been included in this leaflet," she said.

"I have been told by the train company that the guide included visitor attractions that were offering discounted tickets.

"All Newtown's attractions, such as the Robert Owen museum, the textile museum and WH Smith museum, have free entry but we should still have been included.

Santa Run in Newtown
A winter leaflet could promote the Santa Run

"I have been assured by the company that they hope to publish a winter edition of the guide and we will be contacted so we can promote the Santa Run which will take place on 7 December," she added.

A Wales and Borders Trains spokesman said: "The leaflet produced for this summer contains information for tourists intending to visit attractions that are accessible from the Cambrian Line.

"It is our policy to include as many visitor attractions as possible in the publicity.

"However, due to space limitations, it is not possible to comprehensively list every town or attraction along the route."

The spokesman added that the train company will consider including information regarding Newtown in future publicity.

The leaflet was published by the Cambrian Line Rail Partnership, which consists of Wales and Borders Trains, the Welsh Development Agency and Ceredigion, Powys, Shropshire, Gwynedd and Shrewsbury and Atcham county councils.
