A teenager with an imitation hand gun sparked a major alert in a west Wales town.

Police were called to the busy King Street area of Carmarthen following reports that a youngster was carrying a pistol.

The replica gun was only capable of firing ball bearings but officers said it was so realistic many people would not have been able to tell the difference.

Detective Sergeant Andy Phillips of Dyfed-Powys Police warned the replica weapons should not be used in public places.

"You have to look a couple of times at the pistol to find out that it is an imitation handgun, though it is capable of discharging ball bearings," he said.

"It is very realistic and I would advise anyone to think twice before producing such an item in a public place."

Police are also advising parents not to buy similar guns for their children following this latest incident on Saturday lunchtime.

"I cannot stress enough the importance of our warning, which everyone should take notice of," added Mr Phillips.

A juvenile was arrested shortly after the incident and investigations are continuing.

Police recovered a ball bearing pistol at the scene.

Mr Phillips stressed that when police received reports of people with firearms they have to respond fully as they have to assume the guns are genuine.

"Reports of possession of weapons in public places will receive a response that is both appropriate and adequate," he added.
