A youth who beat up 1980s pop icon Steve Strange and stole a bracelet given him by Kylie Minogue has been placed on a supervision and treatment order. The ex-Visage frontman was battered on the head with a baseball bat or a knuckleduster and left lying bleeding in a London street.
Sammy Jefford, 18, was found guilty of robbing the 43-year-old, whose real name is Steven Harrington, from Porthcawl, south Wales, as he walked home from a DJ set with a friend, after the ex-singer refused to give him 5.
On the first anniversary of the attack on Friday, a judge said the order was the best way to deal with Jefford, from Brighton.
Punched
Inner London Crown Court heard a passing motorist saw Mr Strange being robbed and punched repeatedly in Great Russell Street, Holborn, at 0500 GMT.
I was concussed but I do remember a punch going to my face. There was an immense amount of blood |
He had been returning from the Caf De Paris with a friend when he was set upon by Jefford - but refused to hand over the cash. The youth battered the artist repeatedly, rifled through his pockets and took the bracelet - a gift from the Australian star - before leaving him in a pool of blood.
Mr Strange - now a music producer and DJ - still has flashbacks, the court heard.
His mobile phone, credit card, 200 and cheque book were also stolen.
Order
Sentencing had been adjourned in January after the court heard Jefford, who lives with his grandparents, had mental disabilities.
Judge Nicholas Philpot said on Friday an age restriction on naming him did not apply as he turned 18 in February.
He added: "There will be a supervision and treatment order for a period of two years, which I think essential to maintain control over him in the future."
