7,000 daffodils festoon the house |
A host of 7,000 golden daffodils are brightening up a house to raise money for a cancer charity. The fundraiser, for the nationwide Marie Curie Cancer Care's Daffodil campaign, coincides with St David's Day.
The huge makeover at Merthyr Road, Abergavenny, took householder John Jenkins a week to complete.
The yellow display has proved to be a crowd puller and has prompted many people to donate money at the Marie Curie shop in Frogmore Street.
"It looks fabulous, it's absolutely lovely," said shop assistant manager Rhiannon Hopkins.
"We have been collecting money on the street and everyone is saying about the daffodils.
"We have a photo of the house in the shop and a collection tin.
"Mr Jenkins always decorates his house - for Hallowe'en and Christmas - and this year he is very kindly doing it for Marie Curie," she added.
Week-long makeover
Mr Jenkins put the fabric daffodils up by attaching them onto netting hung across his house.
"I had to keep popping in for a cup of tea to warm me up," he said.
Marie Curie's 2003 campaign aims to raise 2m towards its home nursing service, 10 hospice and the research work.
"In Wales, the daffodil campaign helps to fund almost 300 Marie Curie nurses caring for patients in the remotest villages to our big cities in Cardiff and Swansea," said community fundraising manager Lisa Buckley.
She said money also goes to the Marie Curie Hospice Centre at Holme Tower in Penarth.
All of the daffodil materials have been funded by the Yellow Pages, the sponsor since 1999.
Coffee mornings and daffodil walks have also been held throughout the country to raise money for the charity.
Street collections have been held throughout Wales last weekend and more are planned for 1 and 2 March.
