| Monday, 27 January, 2003, 16:33 GMT Post closure plan prompts petition ![]() Customers could use two other post offices in Llanelli One of Llanelli's post offices is under threat of closure but the community will be able to have their say first. The Seaside Post Office in Marine Street could close its doors from April because there are too many branches in the area, said a spokesman.
People can say what they think of the idea before a consultation deadline on 24 February. However, town councillors John Harris and Roy Brown are concerned because, they say, the post office is very busy. "A short distance to other post offices is a long distance to some people," said Cllr Harris. Cllr Harris, who was formerly chairman of the Post Office Advisory Committee, said he had seen queues at the post office. Cllr Brown said: "It is disgusting, there are hardly any facilities round here as it is. He said: "We have two complexes for old people, this is an old people's area. "The staff at the post office are wonderful. They write old people's birthday cards if they can't see, they do everything," he added. Council issue Cllr Brown said he would organise a petition and bring the matter up at the next Llanelli Town Council meeting. A post office spokeswoman said: "This is the consultation period if people have any concerns they should write to us and we will listen to those concerns." If the closure goes ahead, people can use the Llanelli Docks Post Office on New Dock or the John Street branch. "We have a responsibility to ensure that customers in Llanelli will continue to have reasonable access to local Post Office products and services. "Even after any changes are made, well over 95% of customers will still live within a mile of a Post Office branch." Mr Barrett added: "Having met with the sub postmaster from Seaside Post Office and with other local sub postmasters, we have concluded that if the Post Office branch were to close, it would improve the long-term prospects of the other branches in the area." Brian Brett, who runs the Seaside Post Office, was unavailable for comment. Before making a final decision the Post Office say they would like to hear of any concerns and nothing will be finalised until all views are considered. Comments can be made to National Consultation Team, PO Box 641, St Albans, AL1 5XN. | See also: 02 Dec 02 | Wales 15 Oct 02 | Wales 13 Jun 02 | Business 31 Jan 02 | Business Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
