| Wednesday, 22 January, 2003, 11:12 GMT Garden switches on to Red Nose day ![]() The glasshouse was turned red for charity A national landmark in west Wales has been transformed into the world's biggest red nose, as part of the latest BBC Comic Relief fundraising campaign. The domed glasshouse at the National Botanic Garden of Wales at Llanarthne in Carmarthenshire was spectacularly lit up on Tuesday night.
Schoolchildren from the local village primary school switched on the display, which will be shown on a special programme on CBBC on 11 March. This year's Red Nose Day, dubbed The Big Hair Do, will be held on Friday 14 March. Other famous landmarks around the UK are also being lined up for the red nose treatment, but their identities are being kept secret. Hywel Davies, events co-ordinator at the botanic garden, said the night had been brilliant. "It went absolutely superbly - it was breathtaking," he said. "It was done by about 25 enormous red lights all around the glasshouse. "It has been in the pipeline since October last year and it took all day Monday to set it up," he added. Spectacular Irene Evans, a teacher at Llanarthne Primary School, said Tuesday night's event had been extremely enjoyable. "We were absolutely thrilled to be involved," she said.
"The children were very excited and they weren't disappointed. "It looked very spectacular, especially when it went dark," she added. Jeremy Daldry, series producer of CBBC's Comic Relief show, said the glasshouse lights were "just the start" of the 2003 campaign. "Making the glass house into a huge red nose was absolutely spectacular and all the kids were thrilled," said "CBBC, Comic Relief and the Garden had high hopes but we could not have anticipated just how great it looked," he added. Last year, Harry Potter and Celebrity Big Brother helped Comic Relief raise a record sum of more than 52m. Since its launch in 1985, Comic Relief has raised over 250m to combat poverty and social injustice in Africa and the UK. One third of the money raised through Red Nose Day is allocated to projects working in the UK and two thirds goes to projects working in Africa. | See also: 08 Jan 03 | Entertainment 14 Jul 02 | Breakfast 18 Jul 01 | Entertainment 19 Mar 01 | Entertainment 18 Mar 01 | Entertainment 17 Mar 01 | Entertainment Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
