| Sunday, 19 January, 2003, 15:32 GMT Driver spots big cat ![]() A 'puma-like' animal killed a dog two weeks ago A big cat has been spotted by a driver in west Wales when it crossed the road in front of her car. The woman told Dyfed-Powys Police she saw the animal on the A40 at Broad Oak near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire on Sunday. A police helicopter was launched to try to catch sight of the animal but without success.
There have been other sightings in the area since then, and armed police spent several days trying to find the animal. A police inspector said there were no plans to call out marksmen again for the latest sighting. Farmer Mike Shepherd, 62, first saw a cat-like animal attack and kill a neighbour's pet whippet on his farm in Llangadog, which was then joined by another animal thought to be its cub. Predator A post-mortem examination on the dog confirmed it had been killed by a large predator. Further tests were ordered, as the examination proved inconclusive, but DNA results have not come back yet. Four further sightings of a big cat in the area were reported following the attack. Police warned farmers to be vigilant and to patrol their land in pairs. | See also: 09 Jan 03 | Wales 07 Jan 03 | Wales 03 Sep 02 | Wales 05 Feb 00 | UK 11 Jan 03 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
