Girl tested after club syringe attack
Hypodermic needles generic
No hypodermic needles were found at the scene
A teenager has undergone blood tests after she was allegedly stabbed with a syringe in a nightclub in south Wales.

The 16-year-old has been tested for a range of conditions after a hypodermic needle was apparently stuck into her arm at the Zanzibar club in Newport on Friday 4 January.

She and her family now face a worrying time

South Wales Police Sergeant Jim Lias

The girl, who has not been named, was treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital and faces a month-long wait for test results.

A 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident at the scene, and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Officers investigating the incident are looking through CCTV at the club to try and determine what happened.

Sergeant Jim Lias of Gwent Police said: "The nightclub was packed - with up to 1,200 people in there.

"She and her family now face a worrying time.

"Although the likelihood of her having caught anything is slim, it is still a very scary experience for anyone."

Random search

Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack.

Owner of the Zanzibar nightclub John Parsons said: "I am shocked that a 16-year-old got in.

"On a Friday night we stop about 150 people coming in because of their age and lack of ID.

"We have 14 security people on the door at the weekend.

"People are searched at random for drugs and weapons of any description, anyone who doesn't want to be searched is not allowed into the premises."

The premises were searched at the time of the incident.

However, no hypodermic needles were found at the scene.
