| Monday, 30 December, 2002, 12:08 GMT Lights misuse targeted by police ![]() Police are stressing the correct use of car lights Motorists in west Wales who misuse their lights are being targetted by a new police campaign. Officers in Carmarthenshire have received a series of complaints about fog lights being used incorrectly, and lights being poorly maintained.
The importance of only using fog lights - both front and rear - in reduced visibility conditions will be stressed to drivers across the region. Dyfed-Powys Police are also keen to reduce the number of accidents by prompting motorists to check all their lights before starting journeys. "Several motorists complained of the unnecessary use of fog lights by drivers in the run-up to Christmas," said Chief Inspector Nigel Davies in Carmarthen. "If the high-intensity lights are on, it is hard for cars following to see when the brake lights are on," he added. 'Raising awareness' Police will be pulling vehicles over at static point checks across the county as part of the educational campaign. Officers will also be handing out special warnings, called vehicle defect rectification orders, which ensure repairs must be made within 14 days. "We want to reduce accidents by raising awareness," said Chief Inspector Davies. "Driving with defective lights increases the danger to other road users." "Simple checks by drivers for a couple of minutes before they start their journey to ensure that their lights are working properly could well prevent an accident," he added. | See also: 12 Dec 02 | Wales 09 Oct 02 | Wales 04 Mar 02 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
