Former gaol wins heritage award
Ruthin jail
Ruthin gaol dates back to the 17th century
A former jail which has been transformed into tourist attraction has scooped a national renovation award.

Ruthin Gaol, which dates back to the 17th Century, won the bronze award in the Green Organisation's Golden Jubilee Heritage Awards 2002.

Ruthin Gaol has developed greatly in recent months with a premier tourist attraction to be found on site

County Councillor, Gwyneth Kensler

The accolade recognises outstanding improvements made to buildings in which heritage and environmental concerns are prioritised.

It was reopened in May 2002after being awarded a 1m Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

The 100-cell prison began housing inmates in 1654 but had stood empty since its closure in 1916.

One highlight of a visit is 'The Gruelling Experience', which offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about prison life over the years at the Pentonville-style prison.

Better facilities

Ruthin Gaol is also home to Denbighshire County Council's Culture and Leisure departments.

More than 2m has been spent on renovating the Denbighshire Record Office on site.

This means there are better facilities now available to members of the public, including more computers, reception and refreshment room.

"We are delighted to have been awarded this honour," said Denbighshire County Councillor, Gwyneth Kensler.

"The Ruthin Gaol site has developed greatly in recent months with up-to-date offices, research facilities and a premier tourist attraction to be found on site," she said.
