Fire hero may receive bravery award
Teenager Iolo Edwards
Teenager Iolo Edwards rescued the family
A teenage boy who rescued a neighbour and her child from a blazing home, may be in line for a bravery award.

Iolo Edwards, from Penrhyndeudraeth near Porthmadog climbed on to the porch of a neighbour's burning house to pull a 20-month-old boy to safety.

A spokesman for North Wales police has praised the actions of the boy: "What Iolo did was absolutely fantastic," he said.

And Iolo said one of the firefighters who arrived at the scene told him he may be in line for an award.

Iolo, 13, was at home with his parents and a friend early on Saturday morning when they heard cries for help coming from a house two doors away.

They ran out and saw a woman with a 20-month-old boy in her arms at the upstairs bedroom window of the terraced house in the village of Penrhyndeudraeth, near Porthmadog in Gwynedd.

She was shouting for help and smoke was issuing from the room. Iolo's father Tony Edwards, tried to break down the door.

Meanwhile, the teenager scrambled onto the roof of a porch under the bedroom window and plucked the baby from the woman.

He passed the baby boy to his mother, Tania, who was standing below. The mother then managed to climb down to safety.

The pair was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor, suffering from smoke inhalation and were later released.

He said the fire was caused by two candles on a shelf in the living room that had been left on.

Iolo explained that his parents had returned from the pub when they all heard the cries: "Help, help, there's a fire in ther house."

"I ran on top of the wall and on to the slate shed," he said.

"I grabbed the baby and pulled the woman onto the roof, " he said. "I ran across and gave the baby to my mum, and then called 999."

An 80-year-old living in between the home of Iolo and the mother and child's house had to be evacuated because of the smoke.
