Crowds gathered to see the Christmas entertainment
Thousands of people attended the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights in Wrexham.

Organisers said the event went well but four youngsters had to be pulled from the crowd during the entertainment on Thursday evening.

The children were all treated by firstaiders and none were reported to have serious injuries.

Town centre manager Isobel Watson said all security staff were first-aid trained doormen.

"In the crowd we had security men wearing tabards to be identified, who were helping to keep the crowds calm and controlled.

"We also had a number of police officers on duty and they were also within the crowd," she said.

Council spokesman Paul Roberts said the evening went well: "Once again the switch-on of the Christmas lights in Wrexham was a huge success.

"All matters of crowd control were dealt with appropriately and quickly by professional security staff.

"Due to the increase in crowds year-on-year and the popularity of the event we will now be reviewing all issues relating to this annual event," he said.

Acts on stage included boy band Blazin' Squad and children's favourites Bill and Ben, the flowerpot men.

Members of Wrexham football club's squad were also on stage during the evening.

Kimberley Griffiths, 17, from Corwen in Denbighshire said the event was fantastic: "I really wanted to see Blazin' Squad - they're just gorgeous."

Cassy Cousins from Wrexham said she enjoyed the local entertainment.

"It's been really good and I liked seeing Kelly Crewe who is from Llay - the same village as me."

The event ended at 1900 GMT when Wrexham's mayor Rodney Skelland officially switched on the hundreds of fairy lights.

The centrepiece of the decorations is a 40ft tree which was hoisted up into the middle of Queen's Square.
