| Thursday, 14 November, 2002, 15:37 GMT Floods cause problems for strike cover ![]() Green Goddesses have been kept busy Heavy rain has hampered efforts by military personnel to provide cover during the first night of the 48-hour strike by firefighters in south west Wales. Overnight downpours across the region caused localised flooding, which made driving conditions treacherous.
During the night, Green Goddess appliances responded to eight incidents in the Mid and West Wales Fire Brigade region. They also received six hoax calls. Among the range of incidents were a road traffic accident in Cross Hands and a chip pan fire in Pontarddulais. The appliances also attended a caravan fire at Llansamlet and a rubbish fire at a shop in Swansea. In Milford Haven, 42mm of rain fell overnight. There was flooding across Carmarthenshire, with streets affected in Burry Port, Llangennech, Whitland and Laugharne. On Thursday morning, there were 13 flood watches still in place on rivers throughout south west Wales when military appliances attended six incidents. The control centre in Carmarthen received a total of 67calls between 0700 GMT and 1700 GMT with green goddesses being sent to 28 incidents. A badly-injured motorist was rescued when he was trapped in his car in floods near Pontyates in the Gwendraeth valley. Paramedics and police freed the man as floodwater rose around his crashed vehicle. Incidents Flooding also affected the A477 at Llanddowror and the A484 near Kidwelly. A Green Goddess appliance and a crew with breathing apparatus dealt with a fire at a house in Haverfordwest at 0945 GMT. Meanwhile, a landslide at Ferryside delayed the Carmarthen to London train. In Pembrokeshire, Clocketts Road in Tenby was closed for several hours as was the road linking the villages of Reynalton and Jeffreyston. Pembrokeshire local authority said it received no reports of any properties flooding, but staff were to make sure all culverts were clear. | See also: 18 May 02 | Wales 10 Nov 02 | Wales 27 Oct 02 | Wales 22 Oct 02 | UK 22 Sep 02 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
