Father-of-four Michael Bowen, 39, and his wife, Kim, had taken the family motor to a garage in the notorious Hillbrow area of Johannesburg when two armed robbers burst in.
The financial adviser was shot three times as the raiders tried to get away - a shopfloor worker was also killed - and died later in hospital. Mrs Bowen escaped unhurt. One of the killers was seriously wounded in the attack, but a second man escaped. The Bowens has been planned to move back to Barry, south Wales, before Christmas after living in South Africa for 10 years. Mr Bowen's mother, Vera Wright, 63, is flying to Johannesburg for her son's funeral and cremation. His ashes will be brought back and laid to rest at a cemetery at Ely in Cardiff. Dangerous area Johannesburg police said they thought the killings came after the robbery began to go wrong. Hillbrow is reputed to be one of the most dangerous areas in the world. The Foreign Office has warned British travellers to take extra care in the wake of the shooting. A spokesman said: "Visitors to the city should avoid the Hillbrow, Berea and central business areas, especially the Rotunda business district. "There is a risk of car-jacking and armed robbery in some areas." | See also: 25 Oct 02 | England 05 Jan 00 | Africa 04 Oct 02 | Business 31 Oct 02 | Scotland 01 Nov 02 | Business 02 Nov 02 | Country profiles Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
