Aberglasney house, a medieval estate in Carmarthenshire, reports many sightings from visitors and workers alike.

It recently topped a list of the UK's most haunted locations in the Sunday Times.

Visitors to the estate - which is now a tourist attraction - have said they see and hear things on a regular basis.

"When we first opened people would tell us there was a presence here and they would leave," said senior guide Gavin Davies.

"A medium came here and counted more than 90 ghosts.

In 1650, five maids died in the same room on the same night at the house.

"The five maids all died in the blue room - most probably from carbon monoxide poisoning from the open fireplace," said Mr Davies.

"They all went to bed alive and well but, by morning, they were dead.

The area is steeped in history

"Five candles have been seen burning in the room since then."

Aberglasney, in the Tywi Valley near Carmarthen, is first mentioned in poetry dating back to 1470.

It has changed hands over the years and was last lived-in in 1954 before falling into dereliction.

A trust was established in 1994 and work started in 1998 to restore the house and its gardens.

It now attracts more than 60,000 visitors each year.

Operations Director Graham Rankin confirmed there were some mysterious goings on.

"I've heard some odd rattlings I can't explain," he said.

"The lady seemed perfectly sane to me, and others tell me their cameras don't work here.

Close by is Coed Llathen battle field where the then-Prince Edward suffered a crushing defeat by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd's army in 1257.

A total of 3,000 English knights and foot-soldiers were killed - more soldiers than at the Battle of Hastings.

According to local legend, anyone living in the shadow of the hill where the battle was fought is cursed.
