Margaret Pritchard, from Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales, had been suffering from cataracts for several years.
The condition meant that she could see general shapes, but no detail. She decided to go for surgery to remove the cataract from her right eye when she realised she could not see the latest addition to her family, Kasey Rae Jones. Surgeons at the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr performed laser treatment on Mrs Pritchard and within hours she was able to look at the four-week-old. "You can't believe the thrill I had when I could see Kasey Rae," said Mrs Pritchard. "She is marvellous and really beautiful. "I can't thank the doctors enough for giving me the gift of sight," she added.
Mrs Pritchard, who used to run the Lord Raglan Pub in Cefn Coed, is now considering having the cataracts removed from her left eye. Her daughter, 86-year-old Lilian Arthur is glad that Mrs Pritchard only had to wait five weeks for the operation. "When I contacted the doctors, I asked if they could operate soon because of her great age," said Mrs Arthur. "But, I never expected them to arrange it so quickly, and we are all grateful to the hospital." Brave Lisa Jones - Kasey Rae's mother - is pleased that the surgery has been a success. "My daughter's birth means there are now six generations of the family alive," she said. "Margaret was brave to go through with the operation but it was worth it. "It was a very emotional moment for everyone when she was able to see Kasey Rae. "The look on her face was something special," she said. | See also: 30 May 02 | Wales 03 Oct 02 | Wales 28 Mar 02 | Health 23 Feb 02 | Health 18 Dec 00 | Health 15 Mar 00 | Health Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
