| Saturday, 5 October, 2002, 09:13 GMT 10:13 UK Disabled adults try out the slopes ![]() People with disabilities are invited to take part A new sports initiative for people with disabilities is being trialled in Pontypool in south Wales on Sunday. A Have a Go day is being held to encourage more people to sample dry slope skiing.
The event at the town's ski slope is free and fully trained volunteers will be on hand to offer support. A range of equipment will be available to help those with physical disabilities. Robin Davies, chairman for the Welsh branch of the British Ski Club for the Disabled said: "Anyone with a disability in the area is invited to come along. "There will be a whole team of people to help and there will be a lot of equipment so everyone can have a go.
"We have got a bi-ski which will allow people who don't have the use of their legs to ski. "We are also able to help people who are blind by issuing instructions via a microphone and headset," said Mr Davies. The Have a Go day follows on from the Special Olympics Welsh Open Championships held on Saturday in Pembrey, Llanelli. The event is being supported by Torfaen council. Grenville Bolter, the disability sports officer for the council said that the initiative could become a regular event if people enjoyed it.
"The idea is for people to come along to try skiing to see if they like it," he said. "We have got 15 volunteers from the area who want to train as instructors. "I have spoken to a number of people who are going to try skiing for the first time and they are really looking forward to it. "There is no where else in south east Wales where this is being tried out and we are really hoping that it will be a success," he added. The Have a Go day is held at Pontypool Ski Slope on Sunday between 1100 BST and 1600 BST | See also: 04 Oct 02 | Wales 16 May 02 | England 29 Sep 02 | Breakfast with Frost 26 Jun 02 | England 09 Mar 02 | Scotland 08 Jan 02 | Asia-Pacific Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
