| Thursday, 19 September, 2002, 18:45 GMT 19:45 UK Leaders unknown to many voters ![]() Mr Jones and Mr Morgan are unknowns to many Six out of ten voters do not know who Wales' First Minister Rhodri Morgan is, according to a new poll. Just 36% of 500 people questioned could name the Labour Welsh Assembly leader, the survey for BBC Wales' Dragon's Eye programme found. But there is also bad news for other political parties in Wales. Plaid Cymru's Ieuan Wyn Jones was an unknown to ever more people and voters perceive a big north-south divide in both leaders' policies. The news paints a picture of disaffection amongst the Welsh electorate and could come as a blow to the parties with just eight months until the second ever Welsh Assembly election. The 1997 referendum on devolution scraped a "yes" vote by just 6,721 votes. Now the parties are building toward May's second election, with Plaid looking to sustain gains made on Labour in the inaugural election. Market Research Wales Ltd polled 500 people around Wales for the new series of Dragon's Eye.
Many voters were similarly clueless about the pair's records in their party, however.
Most people surveyed also believed Mr Morgan and Mr Jones speak only for their indigenous south and north Wales respectively. And - on the eve of Mr Jones' keynote speech to his party conference in Llandudno - 13% of people thought him to be a better leader than predecessor Dafydd Wigley. When asked whether Ieuan Wyn Jones or Rhodri Morgan would make the best First Minister, 45% favoured Mr Morgan, while the Plaid leader lagged behind on 17%. Dragon's Eye returns in a new series on Thursday, September 19.
