The couple, who have not been named, were rowing out to their yacht when they capsized and they drifted three miles down the River Cleddau before being picked up.
Coastguards said they were inundated with emergency 999 calls from the public who had heard the couple's cries for help and their whistles. The man and woman were treated for hypothermia and coastguards say they survived because they had been properly equipped with life jackets. The incident happened at 2200 BST on Sunday when the couple were caught by the ebb of the tide as they rowed out to their yacht moored near Rudders boatyard. Coastguards launched a major search which involved the police unit, local search and rescue boats and the port authority's boat - The Hakin. The couple were rescued along with their dog- Rosie- who had managed to stay with the woman in the water. Coastguards on Monday paid tribute to the couple who had been well prepared. Hilary Orton, Milford Haven coastguards watch manager, said: "They were very responsible. "Their lifejackets were certainly a major factor ensuring their rescue. Lifejackets "Not only did they keep them afloat but also allowed them to use their whistles. "Both had been in the water for about 50 minutes which is quite a long time. "If you go over the side at night there's a high probability you would not be recovered. "But this has highlighted the need for everyone to wear lifejackets, preferably with reflective strips and a light." The couple were treated by paramedics and for hypothermia at Withybush hospital in Haverfordwest before returning home. | See also: 30 Aug 02 | Wales 25 Aug 02 | Wales 31 Aug 02 | Wales 10 Jun 01 | Wales 23 Sep 01 | N Ireland 13 Jun 01 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
