Welsh tourists killed in Belgian crash
Minibus
Two men were killed instantly in the crash
Six Welsh tourists are recovering from a road accident in northern Belgium which killed two of their friends.

The group's minibus collided with a lorry in the city of Ypres at lunchtime on Saturday.

The eight men from Powys were travelling to watch the Grand Prix at Spa.

A police spokesman named the two dead as driver Edward Evans, who would have celebrated his 52nd birthday on Sunday, and Geoffrey Edwards, 53.

The six survivors were taken to the Jan Yperman hospital in Ypres, where three were treated for serious injuries.

None of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the lorry, which was carrying a crane, was taken to hospital with shock but was later discharged.

Belgian police believe the accident happened when the driver misunderstood a traffic light and turned left into an oncoming lorry.

Consular assistance

The minibus was knocked onto its side by the collision on Saturday.

The tourist group had arrived in Belgium on Thursday and had been sightseeing in Ypres, the site of an important British First World War memorial.

They had intended to travel on to the Grand Prix in Spa on Sunday.

The Foreign Office said consular staff were contacting the families and offering them assistance.

Elwyn Jones, 52, Danny Jones, 35, David Jones, 53, Christopher Rees, 47, Lawton Symons, 59, and Huw Thomas, 42, were the other men.
