Jet pilot trainers in 50th reunion

A reunion of about 150 ex-RAF personnel, who trained pilots to fly jet aircrafts, are gathering in west Wales to mark the 50th anniversary of the formation of their unit.

The event, attended by members of 233 Operational Conversion Unit, is being held at the former air base Pembrey, near Llanelli.

I am sure there will be lots to talk about when we all meet up

Organiser Michael Hope

The unit were responsible for training pilots - used to flying piston powered aircrafts - to fly fighter jets like the Vampire Ground Attack aircraft.

Organiser Michael Hope, expects many old friends to meet up for the first time in years at the event.

"It has taken nearly 18 months to organise this reunion.

"We have got people coming from all parts of the country and I am sure there will be lots to talk about when we all meet up," he said.

Despite Mr Hope's efforts to contact as many people as he can from the unit, he admits it wasn't possible to contact everyone.

"There are many people who I couldn't get in touch with.

"Many of my colleagues remember people from the unit but only by their first name - which is a shame because I am sure a lot more people would like to have attended.

"Unfortunately, many of the older officers have passed away in the years since the unit was started," he said.

As part of the reunion, members of the unit will be treated to an air display by a Spitfire and Harrier jet.

There will also be a commemorative dinner and a church service will be held to remember those who served with the unit.

"It is going to be a very informal gathering and a chance for everyone to catch up.

"For many, this will be the first time in years they will have seen old friends.

"We are all over 60-years-old now so it will be nice to see how we have all changed and find out what has been going on since we were last together," he added.
