David Beardsmore, of Pentwyn Lane, Bettws, Newport, and Craig Richards, of Jenkins Street, Abercwmboi, Aberdare, were too late to save Jonathan Lane, who was overcome by noxious fumes during the incident at Park Environmental Services in Newport.
But their efforts did not go unappreciated. Both have been told they are to be awarded prestigious medals from the Royal Humane Society. They were nominated for the award by the Chief Constable of Gwent, Keith Turner. The uncontrolled release of hydrogen sulphate and other chemicals sparked a major containment operation at the plant last July. Gwent Police cordoned off roads leading to the plant as firefighters battled to control the problem. First Aid Five ambulances were on stand-by at the scene for several hours. Both Mr Beardsmore and Mr Richards were given First Aid at the scene and then treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital. Mr Lane, who lived at Ridge Road, Sutton, Surrey, was declared dead at the scene. The two courageous workers won the praise of Major General Christopher Tyler, Secretary of the Royal Humane Society. "Thoroughly deserved" "These two brave and loyal colleagues did everything they could, despite the obvious risk to their own lives," he said. "They are a credit to their employer and thoroughly deserve their awards." No date has yet been fixed for presentation of the award. The Royal Humane Society was originally formed by a group of London doctors in 1774. It is the leading UK organisation responsible for honouring lifesavers and those who have been involved in heroic rescue incidents. | See also: 06 Feb 01 | UK 08 Mar 00 | UK 24 May 00 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
