| Monday, 26 August, 2002, 06:59 GMT 07:59 UK Vicar breaks two world records ![]() A 3,000 gallon jelly is up for the world record A vicar has successfully set two new world records in his campaign to raise money for seven local charities. Canon Clive Southerton organised a Bank Holiday extravaganza as part of a 50,000 fundraising effort.
The vicar of Prestatyn wanted to break several world records but he said they did not succeed in every task. "We made the world's largest jelly and we set a record for the world's largest bara brith at 14 yards. "We didn't break the Mexican wave record or the world's largest street party. "However, we did abseil the height of Snowdon and set a new record for the world's longest hokey-cokey." He had hoped the multi world-record breaking attempts would win recognition for the town in the Guinness World Records. However, judges from the organisation have stopped officiating over funday events, so the records in Prestatyn are unofficial. Canon Southerton was supported in the world record attempts by a number of charities.
They include North Wales Cancer Research, British Heart Foundation, Prestatyn and District Guides, St Kentigern Hospice at St Asaph and Crossroads Care. "I think we have managed to raise well over 6,000," he said. Canon Southerton said thousands of people attended the event and it put Prestatyn on the map. "There must have been three or four thousand here, it was a wonderful day and a great atmosphere. "It was good for the town because there were quite a lot of holiday makers here." The vicar already has some experience in world record attempts under his belt. Four years ago he talked non-stop for 52 hours to claim the longest after-dinner speech title. Last year he was given official recognition for his community and charity work when he was awarded an MBE. | See also: 14 Aug 02 | England 04 Aug 02 | Americas 24 Aug 02 | Wales 18 Aug 02 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
