Family visit scene of falls death
Herve Bola's family hold prayes at the pool where he drowned
Prayers are said at the spot where Herve drowned
Relatives of a teenager who drowned while on an outdoor activities holiday at a south Wales beauty spot have visited the scene of his death.

Herve Bola, 16, from Woodford Green in Essex, drowned at a waterfall on a visit to Sgwd y Gwladys Falls, near Glynneath.

His family, including his grandmother and cousin, travelled to the area and held a service at the spot where Herve died.

His cousin, Alan Esale, said that the family would be collecting the body of the teenager to take home.

Eyewitnesses have said that Herve got into difficulty after jumping into the river to cool off, at the beauty spot - known as the Lady Falls - near Pontneddfechan in the Neath Valley.

Following the incident, Herve's family - who moved to the UK from Zaire - said that he could not swim.

Witnesses said that attempts were made by by-standers and friends to rescue the youth, who had been staying as the Glasbury House activity centre in Herefordshire which is owned by the London Borough of Redbridge.

A spokesman said the centre had an unblemished safety record over the 40 years it had been running.

Two South Wales Police officers called to the incident also jumped in the river to try to rescue the teenager but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as drowning and both the police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched investigations into exactly what happened.

An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.

Tourist spot

The area, where the accident happened, is a well-known tourist spot within the boundaries of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

It is popular with walkers for its caves, rivers and gorges.

Last August, and less than two miles away, a college trip to nearby waterfalls ended in the death of 17-year-old Jason Dalton.

The teenager was on a field trip as part of a personal development and confidence-building course when he drowned in a swollen river.
