News Online's Tom Bourton checks out Welsh stars in the headlines on the Web and in the papers. It makes sense to think that, when Catherine Zeta Jones and Charlotte Church met at Ian Botham's fundraising walk for a children's hospital in Wales back in April, the two international superstars exchanged style tips.
But few would have guessed that the glamorous Los Angeles moviestar would be the one raiding the wardrobe of the Ely-born singer. On Sunday, the Mirror picked up some pictures of CZJ modelling a similar pink tracksuit to the "pyjama-style outfit" worn by 16-year-old Church for the walk. Both stars also attracted media attention on their own this week. CZJ has been spotted wearing a wedding dress and getting hitched to Billy Bob Thornton on the set of her next film, Intolerable Cruelty - George Clooney also stars. And Charlotte has been speaking about a new love in her life - a student at Coleg Glan Hafren, who apparently "looks a bit like Simon from Blue". Meanwhile, Matthew Rhys was spotted at the Dolgellau Sesiwn Fawr, helping out with his uncle's Welsh lamb stall. The Cardiff-born star told BBC's Cymru'r Byd site that he hoped his latest movie The Abduction Club, which opened on Friday, would be well-received.
He has also been talking to BBC Wales's In the Picture site about the movie - check out the link on the right. If you are keen to see Matthew's next visit to London, the National Theatre website has posted details about a play called The Associate, which Matthew will star in during August. If music is more your scene, the Welsh proms have got under way in Cardiff, and nme.com have revealed Underworld are opening their first UK tour for over two years at Cardiff University on 31 October. The band, which includes Welshman Karl Hyde, will release its new single Two Months Off on 9 September, closely followed by a new album A Hundred Days Off. The Manic Street Preachers have also announced they will team up with Ian Brown to play the Dublin Point on 1 December. The Manics have finished work on new single Forever Delayed, which is expected to appear on the band's upcoming greatest hits album, due out later in 2002. Staying in rock, and an inquest in Tredegar, south Wales, has heard how Jon Lee, drummer with Newport band Feeder, hanged himself in January at his Florida home after telling his wife he was "going to do something stupid". Magazine stars Blurring the line between pop and popular culture, John Hartson's 19-year-old sister Vicki is out to match her brother's celebrity status by auditioning for a new reality TV show called The Fame Academy. The BBC programme, which has been testing wannabes in Cardiff, will pick 12 hopefuls, then make them live together as well as teach them how to become pop's next big thing.
Trawling the magazines, Now carries an interview with Welsh star Charles Dale, who has left Coronation St and is now starring in BBC1's Paradise Heights. The 39-year-old revealed that he and his wife are expecting their first child in September. Finally, there is more on last week's story about Christian Bale and a caped role in the Batman vs Superman movie - he is still linked, but countingdown.com has a scooper saying Bale is also being courted as the next Bond. Oh, and do not get confused about talk of a new Hannibal movie - it might not be Sir Anthony Hopkins' flesh-eating psycho, but a different Hannibal altogether. Rumours of a project - possibly led by Vin Diesel - could see a film about the Carthaginian general taking elephants across mountains to bother the Romans. | See also: 22 Jul 02 | Newyddion 19 Jul 02 | Entertainment 21 Jul 02 | Wales 17 Jul 02 | Wales 27 Apr 02 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
