| Thursday, 11 July, 2002, 15:21 GMT 16:21 UK Patrol man is top of the pops George Smith was nominated by the pupils The title of Lollipop Person of the Year has been awarded to a pensioner of almost 80 from Gower after he was nominated by children who regularly use his crossing patrol. Lollipop men and women provide a crucial service for school children all over Wales. But George Smith who works near Llanmorlais Primary School stands out as the best in Wales.
Delighted at winning the award, he puts his success down to his "tact and diplomacy" when dealing with motorists. He claims both are essential as the "average driver hasn't a clue about what speed they are doing." Pupils Rachel Evans and Joshua Sanders are junior road safety officers at the school and nominated Mr Smith. "He's a caring and courteous man who always has a smile and a few kind words to say to both children and adults every day," said Rachel. "We think he's the best lollipop man in the world. "He's 80 on Sunday and we wish him a very happy birthday. "We think he deserves this award".
A former police sergeant, Mr Smith is well known to local residents. He always turns out with his wife to support school events. Although he has been retired for many years, he still gets up early throughout the winter to patrol the North Gower Road and ensure the children can cross safely. Mr Smith is full of vitality despite recently having a major operation. Children at the school are glad he has returned to work and praised him for his great sense of community pride. Organisers of the award hoped to highlight the need for road safety among school children. They believed this award would increase awareness of the value of school crossing patrols. | See also: 09 Jul 02 | UK Education 21 Nov 00 | UK 12 Sep 00 | UK Education 24 Oct 99 | UK 20 Apr 00 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
