Organisers of Carmarthenshire's United Counties Show plan to make this year's event their best ever.

The show was cancelled last year because of the foot-and-mouth outbreak and more than 30,000 visitors are expected on 8, 9 August.

Tractor pulling draws the crowds

Although the disease outbreak did not stretch as far as Carmarthenshire, it had a devastating effect on farming and tourism throughout Wales.

The event is not only an agricultural show but features exhibitions and trade stands for non-farming visitors.

Carmarthenshire council is discussing plans for a major Celtic centre on the showground site, which will involve a cinema, hotel, food hall and exhibition areas.

Developers say the scheme will create many jobs but council planners are opposing it because the it is sited outside the town.

The United Counties Show dates back to 1896 when it was staged at Carmarthen Park.

Show President Gareth Davies is calling on the farming and business communities across Wales to support agriculture through the event.

"After a difficult year, the effects of which are still being felt, we need to think positively and look forward to a brighter future, starting with our traditional county shows," he said.

"We would like to make the United Counties 2002 show the bouncing board for just that and would like to invite everyone to join us, from trade exhibitors and local businesses to holidaymakers, residents and day visitors.

"The show has been running for 106 years and is now one of the cornerstones of Welsh agricultural life."

Attractions

The show's aim is to promote and support agriculture in the west Wales area.

A large variety of classes are held for beef and dairy cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, dogs, horticulture and craft, flowers and caged birds.

Other attractions will include a lumberjack display by the Welsh Axemen, who hold British and World titles.

An entertainment programme features celebrity TV look-alikes and a speedway demonstration by the Carmarthen Dragons.

Several live bands will also be performing.

The Royal Artillery parachute team will drop in freefalling from 12,000 feet.
