| Tuesday, 18 June, 2002, 07:56 GMT 08:56 UK Protest over incinerator plans The proposals for the estate have come under fire Campaigners against plans to build a 25m waste incinerator in Wrexham are to lobby residents in nearby Cheshire. More than 5,000 leaflets will be distributed to local homes by members of the Dee Borders Waste Action Group on Tuesday.
Roger Prescott, who is organising the leaflet distribution, said: "The dangerous chemicals in the fallout from the incinerator chimney will affect thousands of people living in a 23 mile radius." The proposal by Portuguese developers HLC to build the incinerator has been dogged by criticism. Many people fear the facility, earmarked to be built on the Wrexham Industrial Estate, would have massive health implications. In February the Welsh Assembly called in the application and ministers will now have the final say regarding the development. A petition with around 13,000 signatures from opponents was handed in to the local authority in January. Wrexham County Borough Council has claimed improvements have to be made for waste collection in the county. Currently, around 97% of waste in Wrexham goes to landfill sites - the council has a 29% recycling rate.
HLC has said the new plant could deal with 120,000 tonnes of waste each year. Mr Prescott added: "We plan to continue distributing leaflets throughout the coming months to alert as many people as possible throughout Wrexham and areas of Cheshire to the east," he added. Members of the action group will meet at 1830BST on the River Dee bridge which links Farndon in Cheshire with Holt in north Wales. The demonstration comes the day after Wrexham council launched a 500,000 recycling scheme to cut down on the amount of waste produced throughout the county. Officers are expected to make a decision on whether to back the incinerator plan early in July. | See also: 14 Jan 02 | Wales 18 Oct 01 | Wales 07 Sep 01 | Wales 22 Jul 02 | Wales 22 Jul 02 | Wales 07 Apr 00 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
