As part of National Carers Week, NCH Cymru, one of Wales' leading children's charities, is highlighting the daily challenges and difficulties faced by these youngsters.

Tilly Heigh from Wrexham's Young Carers Project said many children were under enormous pressure.

"In addition to helping around the home and looking after a parent or sibling, young carers may live in isolated rural communities with limited transport and leisure facilities.

"They may find it difficult to enjoy time with other children in their own age group."

She added: "We offer support and advice to the young carers - some as young as six - and work closely with local social services, schools and youth groups."

Supporting youngsters

NCH Cymru works with more than 12,000 children, teenagers and their parents in more than 55 communities throughout Wales.

To highlight its work the charity has put up an information stand in Wrexham town centre.

The scheme aims to highlight the importance of supporting youngsters who take on a caring role within their home.

A spokeswoman for carers in north east Wales said: "There are more than 16,000 carers registered in the Wrexham area alone.

"Today's event has been extremely successful and we had six new carers register with us this morning."

Tilly Heigh added: "We are drawing attention to the way children and young people support and care for people who are close to them.

"Caring can range from practical help such as shopping and cleaning to providing emotional support, understanding and encouragement."
