Bouncer guilty of manslaughter

Graham Speed had denied the charges against him
A north Wales bouncer has been jailed for four years at Chester Crown Court after being found guilty of manslaughter.

Graham Speed from New Broughton near Wrexham had denied causing the death of Richard Hughes who died after an incident at Bonkers Bar in Wrexham last November.

Headlock

Mr Hughes had been drinking in the bar but after an incident was asked to leave.

He was taken out in a headlock and it was the defences' case that he had slipped out of the lock, fallen and hit his head.

The defendant, who had pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, admitted kicking the victim but said it was only a tap and he could not be held responsible for the fall.

The prosecution alleged it was a deliberate kick by Mr Speed, a doorman at the bar which led to that fall.

The 25-year-old father died in hospital ten days after the incident at the popular nightspot in the town last November.

Summing up, Judge Elgan Edwards had told the jury that they had to decide whether an unlawful assault had taken place which caused Mr Hughes to fall with fatal consequences.
